Latest Treatment Options
Those suffering from shoulder arthritis have an array of available treatment options. The types of treatment range from conservative medical management to surgical intervention and can be catered to individual need. Various factors including age, limitations with range of motion, tendon/ligament involvement, and underlying severity of the arthritis, will help determine which treatment is appropriate for you. Our distinguished Los Angeles based orthopedic surgeons specialize in arthroscopic surgery, partial shoulder replacement, total shoulder replacement, and reverse total shoulder replacement.
Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery
Arthroscopic shoulder surgery is the most minimally invasive technique in treating degenerative joint disease of the shoulder. In this outpatient procedure, our surgeons will place you under anesthesia and, with the use of three to four small incisions, are able to visualize into the joint and treat the underlying issues causing your shoulder arthritis.
Partial Shoulder Replacement
Partial shoulder replacement is also known as hemiarthroplasty of the shoulder. Once an incision is made, to fully access the joint, a prosthetic cap or ball can be fixed at the humeral head (the top of the upper arm bone). A hemiarthroplasty of the shoulder is less invasive than a total shoulder replacement and treatment is dependent on the severity of the arthritis.
Total Shoulder Replacement
A total shoulder replacement is performed when the structure and integrity of the joint cartilage, bones, and surrounding supportive structures have been significantly compromised. This procedure involves a 4-6 inch incision for complete visualization of the joint. Once the area is exposed, the head of the humerus and the glenoid (shoulder socket) are replaced with metal prosthetics. This implant acts as the shoulder joint and is custom fit to your natural anatomical structure.
Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement
The reverse total shoulder replacement also requires the implantation of a prosthetic ball and socket joint, similar to that of a total shoulder replacement. However, in this procedure the ball is placed into the shoulder socket while the shoulder socket is then implanted with the ball. This surgery is the reversal of your natural anatomical structure and is usually performed for the most severely damaged shoulder wherein someone has severe arthritis and a chronic tearing of the rotator cuff.
