Anyone can experience chronic shoulder pain, regardless of age. Whether the underlying cause is structural injury or arthritic degeneration, the resulting pain can be excruciating and impair quality of life.
The shoulder joint has the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body. Because of this mobility, the shoulder is more likely to incur chronic shoulder pain. Numerous medical conditions cause shoulder pain, but there are five that we have found to be the most common among our patients. Read about them below for more information.
If you or a loved one is suffering needlessly from chronic shoulder pain, call us today at 888.318.2842 for a consultation. Our physicians at the Joint Surgery Center of Excellence in Los Angeles are experts in treating chronic shoulder pain and skilled in the most advanced surgical procedures.
1. Rotator Cuff Disorders
Physical injuries are among the most common causes of shoulder pain, and of these, rotator cuff disorders are incurred most often. Rotator cuff damage limits range of movement, such as raising arms above the head. Injury can be caused by inflammation, infection, or a tear in the muscle or tendon. Repetitive motions from activities such as swimming and tennis can overload rotator cuff tendons and inflict chronic shoulder pain. If left untreated, the tendon connecting the rotator cuff muscles to the joint can eventually tear and require medical attention.
2. Osteoarthritis (OA)
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is caused by the breakdown of cartilage and loss of elasticity. As cartilage erodes, a joint becomes stiffer causing severe pain that worsens over time. Eventually, the cartilage becomes unable to cushion the joints and cannot prevent the bones from rubbing against each other. The recommended course of treatment for severe osteoarthritis is shoulder replacement surgery.
3. Post-Traumatic Arthritis
Post-traumatic arthritis can result from a severe injury such as a fracture or dislocation. Injury from a car accident is one of the most common causes of post-traumatic arthritis. This type of arthritis can also develop following major or even minor surgery. If ignored, post-traumatic arthritis can worsen, resulting in chronic shoulder pain and the need for joint replacement surgery.
Bursae are tendons that help the joints function smoothly and move freely. Bursitis refers to inflammation of the bursae. Because the shoulder is the most common location for bursitis, this condition is a frequent cause of chronic shoulder pain. In cases of severe bursitis, surgery may be used.
5. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of chronic inflammatory arthritis that occurs in the joints on both sides of the body. It is a degenerative disease causing chronic pain and stiffness. While rheumatoid arthritis usually affects adults in middle age, children can also get it, and it’s more common in women than men. Eventually, chronic shoulder pain and inflammation from RA can become unbearable. Sometimes the joints cease functioning. At this point, shoulder joint replacement may be recommended.
